L1 fire detection system.

A category of fire detection and alarm system under BS 5839-1. L1 provides the highest level of life-protection coverage: automatic detection in every room of the protected building. Used where maximum life-protection is required by the fire strategy.

L1 coverage scope.

An L1 system has automatic detection (typically smoke detectors, with heat detection in specific rooms where smoke detection is unsuitable) in every room of the protected building, including roof voids, ducts, lift motor rooms and similar concealed spaces. Manual call points are sited at every escape route exit. The system is designed to give the earliest possible warning of a fire anywhere in the building.

When L1 is required.

L1 is appropriate where the building's fire strategy depends on very early detection: certain healthcare, sleeping-risk and high-life-safety occupancies. For UK residential common parts, L1 in the common parts is uncommon; more typical is L2, L3 or L5 depending on the building's height, escape strategy and risk profile.
