Glossary
L3 fire detection system.
A category of fire detection and alarm system under BS 5839-1. L3 provides automatic detection in escape routes and in rooms opening onto them where occupants might be sleeping. The scope is narrower than L2 but wider than L4.
L3 coverage scope.
An L3 system covers escape routes plus any rooms opening onto them where occupants might be sleeping or otherwise not immediately aware of a fire. In residential settings this can include common-parts rooms used for storage or services where a delayed-response fire could compromise the escape route.
Comparison with L2.
L2 covers a broader set of rooms opening onto escape routes (any room where a fire could impair escape). L3 narrows that to rooms where the occupant response time matters specifically. In practice, the assessor working from the original fire strategy report will see which category was specified; in older buildings without a clear original specification, the assessor may need to evaluate the as-built coverage and judge whether it meets the building's current strategy.
