Glossary
L2 fire detection system.
A category of fire detection and alarm system under BS 5839-1. L2 provides automatic detection in escape routes plus rooms that open directly onto them, where a fire could compromise the escape route.
L2 coverage scope.
An L2 system covers escape routes (corridors, lobbies, stairwells) plus rooms that open onto them where a fire would impair escape (plant rooms, refuse stores, riser cupboards, electrical intake rooms). It does not cover every room in the building. Manual call points are sited at every escape route exit.
Where L2 fits in residential common parts.
For taller blocks of flats with a stay-put strategy, L2 in the common parts gives early detection where it most matters: in the spaces a fire could spread into the escape route. Where the strategy is simultaneous evacuation, L2 may be supplemented by additional detection or alarm coverage to ensure timely warning across the building.
